Asphalt Shingle Rippling: Why Does It Occur?

Asphalt shingles are popular for their cost-effectiveness, durability and versatility. After your roof’s installation, you might notice that it appears wavy. Rippling shingles could be concerning, but it doesn’t always mean they are in poor shape.

A trusted roofing company explains why this problem occurs and what you can do about it.

After Installation

Typically, shingles will appear slightly bumpy following installation. They should lay flat after exposure to the sun and warm temperatures. If your roof still looks wavy after a few days, it’s best to contact your contractor.

Felt Underlay Issues

Asphalt roofing contractors don’t usually tear off shingles that they cannot replace on the same day. It’s because the felt underlay beneath shingles could wrinkle when exposed to moisture. For this reason, it’s not advisable to install roofing shingles when it’s raining.

When allowed to dry before installing shingles, the underlay will lay flat. However, the shingles will ripple if installed over wet felt. Fortunately, wavy felt underlay is usually just a cosmetic issue.

Improper Sheathing

The sheathing is the layer of wood where roofers attach shingles. Rippling can occur if your contractor doesn’t space this component correctly. There must be sufficient gaps between the boards for expansion and contraction. Shingles can also appear wavy if the sheathing is left exposed to outdoor elements for extended periods.

You’ll know your roof has this issue if the ripples are spaced evenly at around four to eight feet apart. If this is the case, a new deck would be necessary. Are you replacing your old roof, and you noticed it has ripples? Let your contractor know about it because the deck might also need replacement.

Poor Installation

Incorrect nailing direction and stapling are other common causes of waviness in shingles. Felt must be stapled, and shingles should be nailed in the direction they are being laid. When your roofer fails to do this, the shingles will become prone to damage during weather extremes. Poorly installed shingles are more likely to cause leaks and water damage in your home.
