Gutter Pitch, Placement and Hanger Spacing: A Pro’s Job

While gutter installation or replacement may seem like a simple, straightforward process, it is a complex job in reality that is best left to professional gutter contractors. For the gutters to perform their functionalities properly, the entire installation process would require technical knowledge and skills. A single mistake can spell trouble for your home if you choose to take the DIY route.

Determining the gutter pitch, placement and hanger spacing is certainly not a job for amateurs. Jack the Roofer explains why in this post.

Gutter Pitch

When seen from the ground, the gutter system can appear as if it is running in parallel to your home’s roofline. In reality, gutters are slightly inclined to let rainwater flow toward the downspout without hassle. Gutter professionals take accurate measurements to make sure water drains properly. Ideally, gutters must be pitched about 1/4 of an inch for every 10 feet.

Gutter Placement

Whether you are installing sectioned or seamless gutters, it is not right to place them right on the roofline. Keep in mind that water pulls back up on the roofing underside and then flows down under the roof. Placing the gutters too high can cause water to run behind them, causing the fascia boards to get soaked with moisture, which results in rots.

Gutter Hanger Spacing

Your local climate dictates the right hanger spacing for you. For warmer climates, the hangers can be installed close to the center, with spacing no more than 36 inches or 3 feet apart. Cooler climates, on the other hand, require gutters to handle heavier snow and ice for long periods. In this case, the spacing must be half the maximum distance or no more than 18 feet. Incorrect placement can result in sagging at certain spots.
