But do you know that the forms of precipitation that can affect your roof vary? There are at least three different types of roof threats that you need to look out for, and each one of these can affect your roof in a variety of ways.
Hail
These chunks of frozen ice range from the size of a pebble to the size of golf balls, and even bigger. The solid nature of hail alone is enough to make it one of the top dangers to your roof during winter. A pebble-sized piece of hail is enough to make a dent on most roofing materials. This is why your asphalt shingle installation probably had an impact rating that came along with it. This impact rating is an indication of just how tough your roof can be against hail impact.
Snow
Snow forms when the temperature between the clouds and everything below it remains at a consistent temperature – just below the freezing point of water. When you have enough moisture in the air, you’ll get the wet, slush-like kind of snow. If there’s less moisture, you’ll end up with something drier and dustier. It’s the former type of snow that tends to pile up on your roof. And, since this snow is wet, if it melts, it can seep into any cracks you may have overhead. Snow is also difficult to remove safely, unless you’ve been trained to do so and have the equipment to get it done.
Freezing Rain
This type of precipitation is just what it sounds like: it’s rain that freezes when it touches a surface. This type of precipitation is the most dangerous for your roof because it basically creates a sheet of ice on your roof. If you get some freezing rain on it, you’re going to have to be careful with its removal because that ice is going to be very slippery!
